A dominant class of schedules for malleable jobs in the problem to minimize the total weighted completion time

چکیده
This paper is about scheduling parallel jobs, i.e. which can be executed on more than one machine at the same time. Malleable jobs is a special class of parallel jobs. The number of machines a malleable job is executed on may change during its execution. In this work, we consider the NP-hard problem of scheduling malleable jobs to minimize the total weighted completion time (or mean weighted flow time). For this problem, we introduce the class of “ascending” schedules in which, for each job, the number of machines assigned to it cannot decrease over time while this job is being processed. We prove that, under a natural assumption on the processing time functions of jobs, the set of ascending schedules is dominant for the problem. This result can be used to reduce the search space while looking for an optimal solution.

متن کاملAn Iterated Greedy Algorithm for Flexible Flow Lines with Sequence Dependent Setup Times to Minimize Total Weighted Completion Time
This paper explores the flexile flow lines where setup times are sequence- dependent. The optimization criterion is the minimization of total weighted completion time. We propose an iterated greedy algorithm (IGA) to tackle the problem. An experimental evaluation is conducted to evaluate the proposed algorithm and, then, the obtained results of IGA are compared against those of some other exist...
متن کاملA branch and bound algorithm to minimize the total weighted number of tardy jobs and delivery costs with late deliveries for a supply chain scheduling problem
In this paper, we study a supply chain scheduling problem that simultaneously considers production scheduling and product delivery. jobs have to be scheduled on a single machine and delivered to customers for further processing in batches. The objective is to minimize the sum of the total weighted number of tardy jobs and the delivery costs. In this paper, we present a heuristic algorithm (HA...
متن کاملOn rescheduling due to machine disruption while to minimize the total weighted completion time
We investigate a single machine rescheduling problem that arises from an unexpected machine unavailability, after the given set of jobs has already been scheduled to minimize the total weighted completion time. Such a disruption is represented as an unavailable time interval and is revealed to the production planner before any job is processed; the production planner wishes to reschedule the jo...
متن کاملMove-Optimal Schedules for Parallel Machines to Minimize Total Weighted Completion Time
We study the minimum total weighted completion time problem P | | wjCj , which is known to be stronglyNP-hard. We analyze a simple local search heuristic, moving jobs from one machine to another. The local optima can be shown to be approximately optimal with approximation ratio 32 . In case all jobs have equal weight to processing time ratios, the approximation ratio is at most 3 2 − 1 6 .
